HoxxoH’s new mural signals progress for Miami Marine Stadium

On Sunday we went to the Miami Marine Stadium to see Douglas Hoekzema (HoxxoH) complete a new mural. This is his second piece on the seats. He painted the first one in 2014 as part of the Art History Project to raise funds to restore the stadium. The first piece inspired donations and press coverage. The new one is bound to do the same.

A beautiful day amongst art on the water

It was a hot Miami summer afternoon but we were protected by the grand cantilevered stadium roof that kept us cool . The stadium was built just for this type of weather. All you feel are the refreshing ocean breezes while the Miami skyline sits beautifully in the background. Dozens of boats were out in the basin as sea planes took off into the sky and people waved as they passed by. This place is special- groundbreaking architecture, historic boat races, bands on the floating stage and the colorful art/graffiti. The stadium holds a rich history which is rare in Miami, a young city, and that should be preserved.

Renovation efforts in the works

This may be the last art piece before the stadium is finally restored. The efforts to restore have been going on for several years. The most recent effort to raise funds is a collaboration with Heineken, The National Trust and the City of Miami. They’ve set up a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo: “Save your Seat, Save the Miami Marine Stadium.” Anyone can help since there are a range of donation options to choose from including T-shirts and prints, to concert tickets and even a seat from the stadium. Heineken will match the first 20k of donations and is hosting several events in the coming weeks to spread the word.

We hadn’t been to the stadium in a while and many changes were made when the boat show was held there in earlier in the year. The fence that surrounded the parking lot was removed and the parking lot was refinished. The stadium was cleaned, the fence that surrounds the stadium is locked and guarded. There probably isn’t much outlaw graffiti activity taking place at the moment although we found some cool new pieces.

The efforts to save the stadium have come a long way and have involved numerous organizations. It’s good to see that there is a new movement towards raising funds for this iconic, historic place. There is interest and the restoration of the stadium seems to be drawing closer. We look forward to the day we can sit at the stadium enjoy the breezes and phenomenal views, while watching a concert, having a nice dinner or just enjoying some art.
