Stinkfish- Miami Marine Stadium Mural Project (Part 1)

Last weekend I had the pleasure of witnessing Stinkfish’s work in progress. The murals he painted can now be seen at the Miami Marine Stadium. The once bustling stadium was the site of  a number of live shows from the 1960’s to the 80’s. The stadium holds an important place in Miami’s rich history but now it sits “abandoned” after undergoing severe damage due to Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Well not really abandoned, Graffiti artists have been throwing up pieces at the stadium showing it love for the last few decades.

Stinkfish is a well-known street artist from Bogota, Columbia. He travels all over the world to create his murals. This was actually his first street piece in the U.S. although his work is sold nationally in galleries. His work was recently featured on the runway on purses and dresses in an amazing collab with Prada . The Stinkfish mural is part of a project by Kondoit aimed at gaining exposure to the stadium .

Kondoit is an art incubator that promotes street art through its collection as well as its marketing efforts.  They are funding and managing the urban art portion of the project and working to engage urban art into a wide range of projects, most recently managing the production of murals inside the Iron Mike Productions Gym. Kondoit is working with the Friends of Miami Marine Stadium who are the advocates for the renovation of the stadium.

The ultimate plan is to give the stadium back to the community in the form of a public park and entertainment complex. Kondoit in turn is engaging street artists to produce murals at the location and will then offer a print series to help raise part of the 30,000,000 needed to return the stadium to its full use. So far the Friends of MMS have raised 10,000,000 through different projects and donations. Rightfully street art is being incorporated to honor those who have turned what was a damaged, abandoned place into something much greater. In the end after the stadium has been restored street art should hold a well-deserved place within the site

(As of this time the mural is not longer visible since someone went over it. Ah yes, the impermanence of street art!)
