Choosing the Best Summer Camp for Your Child

Choosing the Best Summer Camp for Your Child

Choosing a summer camp for your child can be a daunting task. Many factors play into it including the kind of camp, the location and hours, the quality and of course the price.  All these may shift in priority according your needs. For instance working parents may need to focus on the hours the camp offers while at the same time making sure that the child will learn something new and interesting.  There are usually many choices within your area, so how does one choose a summer camp that will fulfill most of your needs? First decide what kind of camp you child is interested in attending. There are academic, sports, dance, acting, music and visual arts camps to choose from.

Types of Camps

For instance if you child has is already involved in an activity such as piano you may want her to be in a music or performing arts camp which will incorporate more music, dance, singing and acting these camps usually will feature a Broadway type show at the end of the camp which parents can attend.  This gives kids a great sense of accomplishment after they have finished the summer camp.  It also gives the child a sampling of a little bit of everything involved in performing arts.  If the child is more interested in learning a new instrument a music camp may be more in line with their interest.

Academic camps may be something great that will give the child that extra push during summer to gain an advantage during the school year. Science camps can be very specialized for instance they may focus on electricity or gravity. Children will participate in creating projects according to the science topic. This is a fun way for children to learn how everyday things work and they can later apply this knowledge when school is back in session.

If your child enjoys physical activity or you would like to ramp up their exercise routine a dance or sports camp can be helpful.  These can sometimes be very structured where the child participates in an actual team or learns professional choreography. These camps can also be open where the child gets exposed to different sports and styles of dancing while keeping it less structured and allowing the child to just have a good time.

Visual arts camps are a great way of getting children into art or increasing their existing artistic abilities. There are camps which go for a few weeks and can focus on a range of techniques like painting and drawing to camps that run one day where the child may work on a single project for that day.

Other Important Factors to Consider

After you have decided on the type of camp then you should explore hours and length of time, most camps offer between 1-4 weeks sessions. The camp schedule usually consists of morning hours between 9-3 before or after that time an additional fee is charged.  Research on the web for camp reviews; attend an open house if available to gauge the quality of the camp. This will give you the chance to talk to the instructors and meet other parents; most camps are rather pricey so you want to make sure your child gets the most of the experience.

No matter what you and your child choose there is something out there for everyone. Balance is the key, you don’t want to over stimulate or stress the kids out since summer is a time to recharge for the next school year. Yet it is always good for the child to learn something new or discover something they love and summer is great time to experiment.
