Art Wynwood 2017- Quite Perfect
We are in the midst of high season here in S. Florida but I’d say art season peaks around December when Art Basel takes place. The beginning of the year, January and February, brings a few fairs including Art Palm Beach and Contemporary Art. Both of these take place in Palm Beach but the gem of art fairs that takes place at this time is Art Wynwood. You don’t get the crowds you get during Basel/Art Week but you still get the quality and variety- all in one fair!
Art Wynwood- Getting There
I think Art Wynwood has been improving every year since its inception about 4 years ago. It’s funny because the fair is not actually located in Wynwood due to lack of space, I’m guessing. It takes place in the busy Midtown shops. This year we went on Sunday and I’m delighted to say that it was not too busy. Traffic was light on the way to Miami from Boca Raton and once we arrived parking was easy although the cost was $20. There was also street parking which is by the hour and not as easy to find.
Artists and VIP
We had VIP passes although our guests had to pay for their entrance. They do offer a senior and student discount. The fair itself represented a nice, balanced cross-section of the contemporary art world. These included artists local and international, established and emerging- from Shepard Fairey to How N Nosm, Warhol, Futura and Mari Kim. There was definitely a lot for the street art lover.
I was kind of put off by the fact that everyone was being let into the VIP area, which made it quite busy. I mean if you don’t collect or know someone you don’t get VIP status and well I’d rather not wait for my wine in a long line. This is weird, but the bathroom area was nice, clean and there was a really nice attendant guiding people. Props to that guy for taking his job seriously and being super positive.
Overall Art Wynwood is the fair that not many know of, which is awesome. It provides a great space for art lovers of all levels from novice to collector, to discover and revel. If you’re into art, do yourself a favor and go next year.
