Art Basel- Miami Art Week Wrap-Up

Art Basel- Miami Art Week Wrap-Up

It was a hell of a week! I’m just not saying that, hell is good word for the what the rain created out of Art Basel Miami 2015.  When you take Miami traffic, thousands of out of towners and tons of special events going on at the same time you’ve got quite the mess on your hands. Many outdoor events were cancelled or rescheduled and viewing of artists painting murals was made difficult in the rain.  Even with all the rain and chaos the Miami Herald reported that about 77,000 people attended the main Art Basel Miami Beach fair.

We were in Miami for the weekend, staying in a charming Airbnb right off of Biscayne and 50th. A great location we thought for traveling between Miami Beach, Midtown and Wynwood. Knowing Miami well, as a native, I was able to navigate through the inside streets to avoid traffic but we still got stuck a few times. There’s no avoiding traffic during Art Basel especially with the rain coming down the whole weekend- literally Thursday thru Saturday. The only dry day was Sunday the last day. We even heard from many that sales were down at the fairs and local art galleries. Most people were a bit grumpy over the whole thing but we tried to keep a positive attitude.

ART FAIRS

We were able to attend most of the fairs starting on Tuesday for the VIP previews of Pulse, Scope and Untitled. Then we returned back to Boca Raton (home) for work and rest. We returned on Friday attend many of the other fairs through the weekend including Art Miami/Context, Aqua, Art Basel, and X Contemporary. We also attended a few special events including the print release at the Wynwood Walls, the Jamie XX show at Mana and wonderful dinner with some artists friends from NY.

Overall is was a fun week full of great art, music and friends. As we suffer today from our Basel hangover, lets take a look at some of the art from the fairs and streets.
