An Afternoon in Boynton Beach-Art Walk and Indie Market
When I moved to Boca Raton from Miami about three years ago I never gave Palm Beach County much thought. I was a typical Miamian, anything outside of central Miami- South Beach, Downtown etc. was really not worth the drive and just seemed a bore. I have realized that there is a lot going on out outside of the Magic City.
In my time in Palm Beach I really haven’t done much in Boynton. I took to Delray Beach right away it was the obvious choice since it offers a bustling downtown area full of cafes, festivals and galleries. The most I’d done in Boynton was go to the mall and truthfully it wasn’t worth the drive. This past weekend I ventured out to Boynton Beach; what mostly inspired me were two events taking place there, one was the ActivistArtistA, Love in the Afternoon Art Walk and the other was the Retro Indie Market
The art walk took place in a warehouse district, “The District”, located right off of I-95 and Boynton Beach Blvd on Industrial Ave. On this Saturday afternoon The ActivistArtistA art gallery was open as well a few artist studios. The ActivistArtistA gallery’s exhibit titled “A Stroke of Genius”, featured the paintings, drawings, and illustrations of master tattoo artists. Local Boca Raton tattoo artist Lea Vendetta was showing at this exhibit. I’ve recently seen her mentioned a lot in the news including an article I read in the Sun Sentinel; she is also competing in the reality show Ink Master.
As I walked around I noticed the bay gates to the studios featured artist’s murals, this is part of a project called ActivistArtistA Bay Gates by artist and founder Rolando Chang Barrero. Unfortunately, on this day we were only able to see the art at the ActivitArtistA Gallery, I did notice a few of the artists’ studios were open but wasn’t sure if there was art on display for the public. There is an interesting art movement going on in The District composed of some talented artists. I’m definitely going back for their next event on February 26th, KeroWacked. This event is a cant miss featuring not only art, but food trucks and live music, all in homage to the master!
The Retro Indie market presented by Stitch Rock and House of Vintage was the next stop and well worth it. I attended one of their events in Boca last year but there weren’t as many vendors. This event was spectacular, a shoppers dream! It spanned two floors inside a beautiful 1920’s landmark building. I especially enjoyed the retro sunglass stand; I acquired a pair of vintage Charmants. I wish I would’ve gotten the vendor’s card, he offered an awesome selection of frames. I also got a beautiful handmade headband for my daughter by Jubilee Boutique. There were so many unique items which could’ve caused some real damage to my wallet. Honestly, My boyfriend had to drag me out! I can’t wait for the next one.
I truly enjoyed my afternoon in Boynton Beach, I have a whole new outlook on what there is at my disposal here in good ol’ Palm Beach county. I’m I still a Miami girl at heart yes, but I’m really getting used to how wonderfully serene it is here and discovering that there a lot of uniquely artsy, fun and engaging events all around town.
